Soft Sugar Cookies

3/4 cup shortening
2 cups sugar
3 eggs
5 cups flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1 cup buttermilk
2 tsp. vanilla

Cram shortening. Add sugar, then eggs. Sift together dry ingredients. Add alternately with flour and buttermilk. Add vanilla last. Drop by tsp. Bake at 400 degrees for about 12 minutes. Frost with Buttercream frosting.

Buttercream Frosting:

2 boxes powdered sugar
1 stick butter
1 cup Crisco
2 tsp. vanilla
milk

Combine all ingredients and mix with enough milk to make frosting smooth and creamy and of spreading consistency.
